80. All My Sons(10)(AltETDC3rdSem)

1. Who is Joe Keller?
A:- Joe Keller is the patriarch of the family. He worked his way up from worker to boss or owner. He owns a factory that made airplane parts for the military during World War II.

2. Justify the title.
A:- Joe Keller should have thought of all the pilots who flew in planes that contained defective parts his company sold to the government were metaphorically like his sons. He had a responsibility to care for them which tragically he did not discharge. He should have put their safety above profit. So, the title is justified to pinpoint Joe's slackness and selfishness.

3. Why did Joe decide to commit suicide?
A:- Joe decides to commit suicide after Chris reads aloud Larry's letter to Ann. In the letter, Larry explains to Ann that he knows his father knowingly sent out faulty plane parts.

4. Is Kate responsible for Joe's crime?
A:- Joe's wife Kate holds some of the responsibility because she has known all along that Joe is guilty. She warns Joe to stop pretending there is a jail in the house and to "be smart" when George arrives. Throughout the play Kate warns Joe to be smart. She reminds Joe that their innocence depends on their smart behaviour and careful actions. She allows Joe to hide his guilt and put the blame on their neighbour and friend, Steve.

5. Who is George? Give a critical insight.
A:- George is an important character because his arrival is a turning point in the play. When George arrives, the truth comes out and we learn that Joe was not really sick the night Steve sent out the cracked cylinder heads. Therefore, we understand through George and for the first time that Joe was responsible for the death of the 40s pilots.

6. Who is Larry in the play? Give a critical insight.
A:- Larry, the Keller's missing son greatly influences the other characters in the play. Kate the worrying mother is completely haunted by his absence. She interprets everything that happens as if Larry is still alive. The apple tree which was planted in Larry's memory broke down during the storm. The apple tree acts as a symbol. She became superstitious asking Frank to make a horoscope in order to find out whether Larry went missing on his favourite day. Finally disapproving of Chris and Ann's relationship she still considers Ann as Larry's girl. As per Kate, Larry will come back and unite with Ann. She refuses to believe Larry's death because it might force her to admit her husband's guilt.

7. Examine the role of the neighbours.
A:- Sue presents a cynical view of the events and characters of the play. She resents what she calls Chris's "phony idealism" which she thinks makes her husband want to give up everything in order to devote himself to research. She says about Joe that "Everybody knows Joe pulled a fast one to get out of jail." This presents an alternative view of Joe's crime to the one presented by Joe himself which is that while everyone thought he was guilty when he first got out of prison, they have since accepted his innocence.

8. What is being conveyed in the play?
A:- Miller's intention in All My Sons is to show that a man's public acts and responsibilities are inseparable from his private conducts. He is as responsible to all mankind as he is to his family. It was the setting of time period following World War II after 1939 to 1942. But the message transcends any fixed time.

9. What is the American Dream?
A:- The American Dream is the product of the West and the frontier experience because of its essential belief in the goodness of man and nature. It says that anyone regardless of any background or birth can attain their own version of success in a society in which upward mobility is possible for everyone. The American Dream in this play deflates that Dream showing how this American materialism destroys other values like the father-son relationship and deteriorates the American family. The the Dream corrupts the soul and makes us to do things which we shouldn't had done. Keller is the embodiment of that American Dream. The American Dream is still alive there and anywhere.

10. What are the symbols?
A:- The fallen tree, damaged airplane parts, basement jail and Steve's Deever's Hat are some of the symbols in the play.
