161. IDC 101- Allegory

Allegory is the symbolic fictional narrative that is not explicit in the narrative. It encompasses literary forms such as fable, parable, and apologue. They may have two or more meanings that the reader can understand through an interpretive process. It may be visual or just the narrative media may be used. It may also look like a story within a story. Allegory uses picture, animals, birds, or other forms of art to convey the meaning which may be moral, political, historical or remain hidden.
John Bunyan has been one of the best users of allegory. His "Pilgrim's Progress" has been very famous for being allegorical. In early times, writers as Plato and Aristotle used it too. George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm" (1945) which is under the guise of a fable about domestic animals is actually allegorical too. The character Beloved in Toni Morrison's novel "Beloved" (1987) is also allegorical figure who carries the collective memory and grief of slavery.
