163. IDC-101 Irony

Irony is a literary device in literature takes place whenever a person says or does something and then departs from that saying. It involves the contradiction of our perceived reality. Or, it juxtaposes two contradictory ideas in writing or expressing. Irony also involves real life situations or events. The famous short story by O'Henry- "The Gift of the Magi" shows the situational irony of how how a young married couple come up with Christmas gifts for each other. Della, the wife sells her hair to buy Jim a watchband. Jim sells his watch to buy Della a set of combs. The irony here is that they both sell their most valuable possessions for each other but the hair were for combs and band for the watch were sold. Verbal irony, dramatic irony and situational irony are three types of irony.
