254. AEC 151:I.5- 7 Cs of Communication (1)

1. What are the 7 Cs of Communication?

A:- The 7 Cs of Communication is a checklist or mnemonic device to ensure that one's communication is effective. We communicate with people every day, both at work and in our personal life. We communicate using a number of different methods – face to face, telephone, email, instant messenger, letters, reports, meetings, presentations, video calls or meetings, etc.

In order to ensure one gets the right result when one communicates one's need to ensure that one's communication is effective and clear and this is where the 7 Cs of Communication can help.

The 7 Cs of Communication-
The 7 Cs is a checklist for ensuring one's emails, meetings, calls, reports, presentations and other methods one uses to communicate are clear and that the recipient gets the message.

Clarity
Be clear about the goal of one's message and the purpose of the message. Present one idea at a time making it easier for the recipient to understand. Don’t leave them guessing what the message is about and having to fill in the gaps themselves.

One should set a goal or outcome for what one's wants to communicate and work towards that.

Conciseness
One should keep to the point and keep it short and simple. One should not use unnecessary words or repeat the same point in different ways.

Concreteness
We should be clear, and not fuzzy. Ensure there is enough detail to get the message across but not too much so that the recipient will be lost and that the message is factual.

Adding too much ‘noise’ around one's main points can mean these are missed. Make sure one main points and any conclusions are clear to the recipient.

Correctness
We should check the information if it is accurate and, in written communication, and ensure it is free from grammatical and spelling errors. Then, check the technical parts of your content are understandable by the person receiving the information.

Coherent
We should make sure our message flows well and is laid out logically. The points we make should all be linked to the main topic and should help one to deliver the objective one originally sets out to achieve. And then make sure the tone of the message is the same throughout.

Completeness
We should ensure the recipient has everything they need to understand our message and take action if needed. If action is needed, ensure our message includes a ‘call to action’. Also, ensure that any specific details are clear and included.

Courtesy
One's message should be polite, friendly, professional, open and honest. We should think about the message from the recipient’s point of view and one is empathetic towards their needs. This will help one to deliver the message in a way that’s easy to understand and buy into.

By following the 7 Cs of communication one should find the messages one is delivering much more effective.
