SEC 101 EMOTIONAL Intelligence SKILLS (1) 26,
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to understand and manage feelings. It also helps to understand and respect the feelings of other people. High EQ helps reduce stress, solve problems, and build better ties with friends and coworkers. One can improve one's emotional intelligence through stronger relationships and reach one's goals at work, school, and personal life by processing the emotional intelligence skills. EQ is necesary to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.
The key skills to emotional intelligence:
Different researchers have come up with different models of emotional intelligence. One popular framework by psychologist Daniel Goleman suggests there are four key skills for EQ:
Self-management helps to control impulsive feelings and behaviors. Self management conditions emotions in healthy ways, helps in taking initiative, follow commitments and adapt to any changing circumstances.
Self-awareness helps in recognising one's own emotions and how they affect our thoughts and behavior. Self awareness helps to know our strengths and weaknesses and have self-confidence.
Social awareness is another key to emotional intelligence which is involved with empathy. One can understand the emotions, needs and concerns of others, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization.
Relationship management is another key to EQ. In this, one develops and maintains good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well in a team and manage conflict.
Identifying each particular emotion we experience is another key to EQ. One should be capable of monitoring one's own emotions and recognizing different emotional reactions.
Recognizing the relationship between how one feels and how one behaves is another key to EQ. To understand one's personal strengths and limitations which are open to new information and experiences and learning from one's interactions with others is part of it.
Having a good sense of humour is another key requirement to develop EQ.
One should be confident in oneself and in one's abilities.
Remaning aware of how other people perceive us is also a part of processing the EQ.
People who are emotionally intelligent are motivated by factors beyond external rewards such as fame, money, recognition and acclaim. This also surrounds EQ.
True emotional understanding involves more than just understanding one's own emotions and those of others. One must also be able to put this information to work, in one's daily interactions and communications.
Thus, we realise the necessary keys to identify, develop or process the ways to EQ. All the keys will involve the ability to interact well with others in the overall or total formation of skills in emotional intelligence.
